| TSUNAMI RELIEF WORK |
| |
December 26, 2004 was a grief stricken day for everyone. The killer waves (Tsunami) tolled many lives and made many people and children orphans. Our DBAI, a team of 10 volunteers rushed to Velankanni, the worst affected area for relief work. Our team recovered and disposed hundreds of dead bodies. The CBOs mobilized large amount of medicines, drinking water packets and food products worth Rs. 2,00,000. The affected people were counseled and provided with medical assistance. We have also started a rehabilitation centre at Tharangampadi together with CESVI an Italian based organization. We established temporary shelters for the homeless. Vocational training centres are giving sea based training like boat repairing, net knitting, fish products and boat engine repairing and other trainings like electrician, motor mechanic and driving for the youth. We also distribute boats, fishing nets engines and sales kit meant for women. Construction of four overhead tanks is in progress. To empower the people to combat the natural disaster, Community Based Organizations are formed and training programmes are held to learn disaster management.
