HIV / AIDS
India is one of the most affected countries by HIV/AIDS. In 2007 UNAIDS and NACO estimated that there were between 2 million and 3.6 million people living with HIV/ AIDS in India. In the year 2003 it was established that of all the cases of AIDS reported in India 45 percentages were from Tamil nadu and that too from a few districts. In the district of Namakkal out of population of 1.5 million people3 to 4 present are affected by the disease. In the district of Salem, in the city government hospital alone there are 8000 registered patients of which 500 are infected children.
Responding to these worrying situations Don Bosco Anbu Illam has undertaken various steps to help the infected and affected, and also to prevent the diseases from spreading. Though it helps every one with HIV/AIDS, Anbu Illam’s primary focus is on the children and youngsters affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. |

HIV / AIDS INFECTED AND AFFECTED

Children with HIV/AIDS most often are victims of circumstances. The children’s distress is often compounded by the prejudice and social exclusion directed at individuals with HIV and their families. This stigma may translate into denial of access to schooling, health care and other facilities that would deny the child his/her right to a happy life. Anbu Illam has initiated various steps to promise them a happy future. At present we give them community based care and support and specially nutrition and health care. A new shelter for the HIV infected children is on the process where nutritious food, health care, education and vocational training would be provided with all the facilities. Already the children visit the organisation on Sundays for nutrition, medicine and recreation.

The plights of the HIV affected children are also same as that of the infected. They are looked down not only by the society but also by their relatives. These children are now Anbu Illam’s top priority. We give them shelter care and protection with formal and non formal education. They are sheltered at Namakkal shelter which accommodates 100 boys who do their formal education in the near by government school.
