Sports day for Slum Children
 
Background and Objectives
 
To bring out the skills within the children from school – going and drop outs in the working area.
In the school no opportunities are given to express the talents of children from slum. In order to motivate these children Anbu Illam creates the platform
by conducting various competitions.
Participants and Facilitator

Mr. Xavier and Mrs. B. Jaquline were the facilitators in conducting this program.
380 children from 12 slums, 50 children from preparatory shelter home (adivaram) and 50 children from rehabilitation shelter home
Methodology

It was held on 18.11.2007 at 10 am to 5pm. Gathering of all children and grouping them in age wise, standard wise, Gender wise categorized and the competitions were held

 
Process and outcome
 

Mr. Xavier welcomed the Guests and the participants. Gave an overview of the Celebration. The children and few of the guests lighted the lamp. Mr.K.M.Raja. panchayath president highlighted on the purpose of the celebration. Mrs.Mahalakshmi, the counselor appreciated the service of the organisation and said that this should reflect in the society. She quoted few incidents on trafficking from newspaper.

Mr.K.M.Raja and Fr.Xavier initiated the games according to the categorization age wise which has been done earlier by Mr.Irudayaraj and Mr.Joseph Mari. The environment was very lively and the children gladly took part with sportive spirit.
Fr.Arulappan from St.Johns Matric higher secondary school, Salem distributed the prizes.

He said that Life is full of victories and failures. Each one of us learn to admit the victories and accept the failures too by considering this as steps towards Victory. Fr.Joe Daniel without leaving a single person gave word of appreciation to the children and thanked the chief guests and the staff who contributed.

 
Comments and Feedback

The children in the Slum had not been given the opportunity to express their talents. So this gathering created a chance for getting to know each other personally and a word of appreciation was shared.
